TRIAL BY COMBAT

June 1, 2014

Some of you may have seen this when I posted it last year as a monochromatic piece. I’ve since redrawn about a third of it and fully colored it in honor of this scene’s depiction in tonight’s episode of GAME OF THRONES. VERY EXCITED to see what they’ve done with my favorite scene.RV_spoiler_redux_web

Fantastic! Summed up all the things the book did right.

This is amazing. I can’t believe the attention to details from the book. Well done!

Better than the show’s version by far. Why wasn’t the mountain in FULL plate with a dam shield? What knight fights one handed with no shield?!?!

I’d love to see an updated version of the Tower of Joy. You definitely picked the best two scenes from the novels to illustrate.

Too bad your not working on the Dynamite version of G.O.T.

Wow Jeff, this is amazing. So detailed and it captures the scene perfectly. Keep doing what you’re doing, you are killing it!

Ser Gregor “The Mountain That Rides” Clegane vs The Prince Oberyn Nymeros Martell.

Prince Oberyn Martell talks too much. The Mountain is too big to be any man’s toy.

My respect to The Mad Dog of House Lannister.

    Very nice…

My favorite bit is the look of shock and very real fear on Oberyn’s face and that he struggles in vain for his life when the Mountain grabs him right at the end. The Red Viper easily could be portrayed as an unwavering defiant caricature of vengeful wrath right up to the end and probably has been before, however this cartoonist gives us something rather different and in my opinion considerably more interesting. Their Oberyn Martell is suddenly confronted with the price he is going to have pay for the confession and vengeance for his murdered sister and realises in the last seconds of his life that he really doesn’t want to pay that price…

…but it is already too late!

When confronted by Prince Oberyn Nymeros Martell (the brother of Princess Elia Martell), who repeatedly asserts that “Her name was Elia of Dorne. You raped her, you murdered her, you killed her children,” Gregor’s only concern (besides killing him) is that the man has gotten the order of events wrong.

“Her name was Elia of Dorne. First, I killed her screaming whelp. Then I raped her. Then I smashed her fucking head in. Like this.”

This is amazing! I loved it, very well done. I loved the depiction of Tyrion too, very close to how I first imagined him when I read the books.
    I shall return 🙂

Sigh, I just have to put that episode out of my head. All I do is keep yelling at the screen for Oberyn to finish the job before he shows off and panders to the crowd.

I’m an avid Game of Thrones fan, feel free to check out my blog as I occasionally post some GoT commentary, like this one about the infamous trial by combat in question:

Beautifully done. I had seen this when you had originally published it and traced my way back. I love the tension of the moment and the last scene of both of them just lying on top of each other.

PLEASE do more GoT stuff! I love your style, it’s just so dynamic and interesting, somehow it just fits the crudeness of A song of ice and fire just too well..oh and, please stick to the book if you will, this came to life just too well.
