I asked the Game of Thrones community over at reddit.com to vote on what character they would like to see illustrated. The overwhelming response wasn’t a character but a scene: Prince Oberyn Martell vs. Ser Gregor Clegane. The Red Viper vs. The Mountain. What I’ve got here is probably one of three pages I see for this scene. A Storm of Swords, the third novel in GRRM’s opus A Song of Ice and Fire is so far my favorite. George has me digging fantasy for the first time. This page is spoiler light, but the next one won’t be. Stay tuned!

TRUE ROMANCE

We offered Six panel cinema rewards for our FUBAR volume 2 Kickstarter campaign. This is the first one I’ve gotten to and I had a blast illustrating it. Michael McDermott selected for his reward: True Romance and I’m glad he did. This is on my top 10 favorite movies list. A superb cast with a few cameos that don’t steal the show, but they up the ante pretty hard.I’ve watched it on repeat all day as I crafted this piece and it’s still ringing my bell. ZOMBIE KNIGHT

These are the inks for a pin-up that will run in the ZOMBIE BOMB anthology. I’ve never drawn a Knight before but after the fun I had on this one I think I will draw some more. Stay tuned to see the finished color piece here soon.

SO once again Mr. Rafer Roberts is organizing his now 3rd installment of the DC Conspiracy’s free comic/newspaper: THE MAGIC BULLET.

I contributed the art for this one pager written by Mr. Jeff McClelland poking fun at Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

They hand these bad boys out in the DC Metro area so keep your eyes peeled as they also end up at finer comic shops nationwide.

ROUGHS!! Process blog 2 of 4

The second stage of my process involves taking those small thumbnails and enlarging them to 11×17 and quickly inking them. At this stage I’m more concerned with the actual drawing, because I focused on design in the first stage I can fly through thses and just flesh out faces and backgrounds a bit. Traditionally people use pencils in this stage but I prefer a flair pen. Helps keep me loose with pens. Since I’m inking these in the next stage, this level of detail is fine, but if I were handing these off to an Inker, I would tighten them up a bit.

The pic above is of 12 roughs for Ms. Jennie Wood’s and my project FLUTTER pages 45-56 and the 7 thumbs for a short I’m working on with Mr. Shawn Aldridge for the 215 ink Anthology due out in early 2012.

THUMBNAILS! Process blog 1 0f 4

The first stage of my process involves unreadable doodles in the margins of the script that I’m working on. The next stage for me is to turn those doodles into a thumbnail that’s a bit wider than a business card, which is what you see above. Here my main concern is the design of the page and panels. I try and make them as tight as I can for their size as it saves MANY headaches down the road.

I love drawing thumbnails. I sit down with my script and turn out a full story in a day or two. After that I enlarge them to an 11×17 and embellish as best I can before they get thrown on the light box and inked. That last one on there is some medieval rough neck I got a few plans for.
