I’ve been kicking around an adaptation of this scene from A Storm Of Swords since I first read it two years ago. At first it was 3 pages then 6. I thought 10 would definitely do it. Well it turns out 12 pages was the ticket. Prince Oberyn Martell, The Red Viper of Dorne is a character who is hard not to like. Very excited to see this bit play out in Season 4 of Game of Thrones.   3. Well done! I love how drastic you made their size differences. My image of the mountain was always a wall of human flesh you’d have to tilt your head up to just to get an idea that what you were looking at was a person.

    • According to the books he is supposed to be over 8 feet tall and over 30 stone (which is 420+ pounds). So yeah. The dude is a freaking wall of flesh. In full plate he would be even more intimidating.

      • The actor playing the mountain, Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, is 6’9″ 420 pounds. He isn’t far off of what was written. The man is a monster that can probably do everything he pretends to in the show.

    • You obviously didn’t get it. His entire point was to get a confession from the Mountain, that’s why he fought him to begin with. With the confession he would have what he needed to go to war with Tywin Lannister and the Iron Throne and be backed by the 7 kingdoms.

    My favorite bit is the look of shock and very real fear on Oberyn’s face and that he struggles in vain for his life when the Mountain grabs him right at the end. The Red Viper easily could be portrayed as an unwavering defiant caricature of vengeful wrath right up to the end and probably has been before, however this cartoonist gives us something rather different and in my opinion considerably more interesting. Their Oberyn Martell is suddenly confronted with the price he is going to have pay for the confession and vengeance for his murdered sister and realises in the last seconds of his life that he really doesn’t want to pay that price…

    …but it is already too late!

  25. I stumbled on this looking for images from the upcoming GOT season. But I found it to be more than just a good palate cleanser. I read a lot of comics and the Red Viper is one of my favorite characters in the series. Pity this is his one chance in the spotlight. Yet it’s is still one of my favorite scenes. Well adapted.

    • Right…now show the stupid mountain slowly dying of the poisin the awesome RED VIPER injected him with. The mountain is a d*ushbag. Cant wait till he dies a slow painful death worse than Joffrey’s. =)

  32. Martin is good at going against the emotions of his reader. First I was disappointed when Dog beat Dandarion. Then this episode of Martell losing to the Mountain. Somehow it makes you hate both the writer and the character and in order to see the just ending, you keep reading.

  38. I remember I hadn’t read the books, and I was only just starting to watch season 2 about 2 years ago, but I read through this comic without any foreknowledge of what it meant. As we approached this scene, I began to remember the comic, and I wish I hadn’t. But now, I just had to spoil it for myself. WONDERFUL COMIC. so good. I hate that stupid mountain.

  51. When confronted by Prince Oberyn Nymeros Martell (the brother of Princess Elia Martell), who repeatedly asserts that “Her name was Elia of Dorne. You raped her, you murdered her, you killed her children,” Gregor’s only concern (besides killing him) is that the man has gotten the order of events wrong.

    “Her name was Elia of Dorne. First, I killed her screaming whelp. Then I raped her. Then I smashed her fucking head in. Like this.”

  53. So much better than the overly gory screen adaptation. Despite still being killed for his… arrogance?…, this actually makes me feel like the Red Viper has some dignity left by the moment of his demise. By leaving out all the screaming and the torment, while not omitting the shock and the sudden realisation what a fool he was, you give him the death this truly outstanding character deserves.

    Thank you. You managed to ease the pain of a fan’s heart.

  58. Great work! I like this far better than HBO’s version of the fight. I thought the writers of the episode left out some key lines from the book that really changed the entire feel of the scene. Whereas, you nailed Oberyn’s attitude and the dialogue. Wish HBO had followed your example! Amazing comic.
